Chapter 10

“Rise and shine,” Chase hollered through the closed bedroom door.

I groaned, even though I had no right to be tired. It had rained all day yesterday, so we made it a true lazy Sunday by reading, playing card games, and watching movies. I’d done nothing active. Which was probably why I was so tired. It had been a couple days since I’d done any yoga, and my body was stiff and telling me it needed release.

“Coming.” I threw back the covers, grabbed my crutch, padded over to the door, and peered out groggily. “How long before we leave?”

His eyes fell to my chest and he chuckled. “Nice.”

I looked down at my pajamas and laughed with him. The hem of my t-shirt almost reached the bottom of my shorts, and the words “Talk Nerdy to Me” were splashed across my chest.

“Gift from my mom,” I said.

Still smiling, he turned to leave. “Half an hour, Martin.”

“I’ll be ready,” I called out to his retreating form.

With five minutes to spare, I shuffled into the kitchen.

“I have hot water ready,” Chase said, “in case you want to bring tea with you.”

I sat down at a barstool. “Thanks.”

“If you’re having breakfast, you better hurry.”

“I’m going to pass today,” I said. “Too nervous.”

He gave me a pointed look but didn’t argue. “What kind of tea do you want?”

He read me the choices I had, and I picked a grapefruit and strawberry concoction, hoping it would perk me up.

“Thank you for coming with me today,” I said. “Of course, I’m sure you’re sticking to me like glue to make sure I don’t fudge my community service hours.”

Chase grinned. “Do you know who your girl is?”

I thought back to the paper I’d memorized. “Regina Hathaway. Street name Tiny.”

“Oh great, she has a street name.”

I smiled. “This was her third arrest for shoplifting and resisting arrest.”

“Of course it was.”

The county’s group home for girls was located in the town of Clover, about thirty minutes northeast from Trinity Falls. This wasn't my first visit to the girls home. I'd come many times over the years. Not because I had to, but because I wanted to. Sometimes I was able to make a connection, and sometimes I wasn't.

Arlene Sawyer greeted us at the door. She'd been the coordinator for the girls group home for as long as I could remember. She was mid-fifties, short brown hair, dark glasses, and had a sturdy build. She was a no-nonsense woman who loved her job, but didn’t take crap from the girls.

“Alexa, so good to see you.” She gave me a brief hug, then turned to Chase. “And when I heard that you were bringing a police officer, I was equally excited. It will be good for Regina to see the human side of a cop.”

I grunted. Mainly because I was still getting used to seeing the human side of my cop.

“What did you do to your foot?” Arlene asked, leading us inside.

“I sprained it. It should be back to normal in another day or two.
